When an eclipse occurs, the Sun will appear to disappear, Daylight will fade, temperatures can drop, and a dark shadow will sweep across parts of Earth. It sounds dramatic, but there is no mystery behind it. The event is the result of an extraordinary alignment between the Sun, Moon and Earth.
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves between the Sun and Earth and blocks some or all of the sunlight reaching our planet. The Moon does not produce its own light; it simply casts a shadow when sunlight hits it. When that shadow falls on Earth, people in its path see an eclipse. But why doesn’t this happen every month? The Moon orbits Earth roughly once every 29.5 days, yet its orbit is tilted by about five degrees compared with Earth’s orbit around the Sun. Most months, the Moon passes slightly above or below the Sun from our viewpoint. A solar eclipse happens only when the Moon reaches the right point in its orbit and the three bodies line up closely enough.
The Moon’s shadow has two important parts. The umbra is the darker, narrower region where the Sun can be completely blocked. Anyone inside this path experiences a total solar eclipse. The wider penumbra is where only part of the Sun is covered, producing a partial eclipse. That is exactly what will happen on August 12, 2026. The year’s second solar eclipse will be a total solar eclipse, with the path of totality crossing Greenland, Iceland, Northern Russia, the Atlantic Ocean, Spain and a small part of Portugal. Many other regions across the Northern Hemisphere will see a partial eclipse. For observers in India, however, there is an important catch: the August 12 total solar eclipse will not be visible from India. The path of the Moon’s shadow does not cross the country. The next total solar eclipse visible for India, is expected on August 2, 2027.
Solar eclipses may look like spectacular coincidences, but they are predictable. Astronomers can calculate exactly when and where the Moon’s shadow will cross Earth using the motions of the three bodies. So, when the Sun seems to vanish on August 12, nothing is actually disappearing. For a brief moment, the Moon will simply step into the right place and cast its shadow across our planet.
