They promise the joy of sweetness without the heavy load of calories. But can this sweet friend also play tricks on your body’s metabolism? As the old saying goes, “All that glitters is not gold.” Scientists say the answer is not as simple as yes or no. Artificial sweeteners are more like a double edged key. They can open some healthy doors, but only when used wisely.
Artificial sweeteners, also called non sugar sweeteners, include ingredients such as aspartame, sucralose, saccharin, acesulfame potassium, and stevia based sweeteners. They are much sweeter than ordinary table sugar, so only a tiny amount is needed to produce the same sweet taste.
